In the Band -or- In the Audience
The Barnstable Town Band endeavors to realize a twofold community mission: (1) to provide our best possible effort to musically entertain and enhance the cultural and musical enjoyment for the residents and visitors to our community, and, (2) to provide local musical performance opportunities for all of our Cape Cod musicians.
With respect to the first of our missions, EVERYONE, young and old, is welcome to join our audiences for our annual FREE outdoor Summer Concerts on the Green series of performances every Wednesday evening (weather permitting) during the months of July and August, Just pull up a lawn chair or spread out a picnic blanket on the grass in front to the bandstand on the Hyannis Village Green….and enjoy!
With respect to the second of our missions, BTB welcomes student, amateur, and professional wind and percussion musicians who are eager to utilize and/or enhance their skills in pursuit of the first of our above-stated missions through continued participation in a music ensemble setting. The Barnstable Town Band is composed of a wide assortment of musicians from all backgrounds….from those in the music education field, to employees in the current workforce and professional communities, to retirees who haven’t played their instruments since their high school days, to current members of middle and high school band programs. There is no audition required and no participation/membership fee to be concerned about. All that we ask is that you be upfront with us regarding your skill level and understand that newer members may be requested to play 2nd or 3rd level parts in deference to those who have been with us for a number of years. You can contact us by clicking here and indicating your request to join our organization, plus your particular instrument/talent and relevant skill level. We will respond to you with an indication of the capacity in which you might be able to participate with us and provide you a personal contact information form for you to complete for future contact purposes. The following table will give you guidance to the most frequent BTB available openings at the start of each season…
Guide to BTB Available Openings:
| Anthem Leaders/Singer | A person who feels comfortable leading the audience during singing of the Star-Spangled Banner and other sing-along opportunities. It would be even better if the person might enjoy an occasional performance of simple songs with the band. |
| Group Anthem Singers | Civic organizations (scouts, etc.) or choirs (church, etc.) that would enjoy the opportunity to sing the National Anthem before a BTB concert. |
| MC/Announcer | A person with a public speaking or theatrical background to welcome the audience and introduce pieces to be performed by the band. |
| Woodwinds | Flutes, 2nd Clarinets, 2nd Oboe, Bassoon and Saxophones |
| Brass | ALL Lower Brass players; 2nd and 3rd Trumpets |
We begin our rehearsal sessions weekly on Wednesday evenings from late April through June and we encourage all bandmembers to attend at least half of those rehearsals, as well as our July and August concerts. . We understand that other commitments may preclude your attendance from time to time, but to ensure respectable concert performances, a certain level of consistency in rehearsal and concert attendance is required.
